ABOUT ME

A custom woodworker with a plethora of skills & resources

MY STORY

My name is Jeff Smith (AKA Dr. Sawdust). I have always been a hobby woodworker and was able to purchase some of my woodworking machines while I was employed.

I was a dedicated watcher of the New Yankee Workshop with Norm Abram. I also went to woodworking shows both regional and national. At one of those regional shows, I met a guy named Lonnie who had just purchased a CNC Router.

About 6 years ago, I lost my job because the company, a sign company, moved out of Northern Virginia. The company had a good supply of HDU Foam which I offered to my new friend Lonnie to use so he did not tear up his new router bits. We became instant friends. His Legacy CNC Router added a new dimension to my woodworking offerings.

Custom wood engraving and personalized gifts are only the beginning of my product line.

All it takes is a conversation and a description of what you’re looking for and I can work with you to bring your vision to life. I have plenty of hardwood options and I can build a piece that’s a perfect match for whatever you’re trying to create. I love the natural look of wood. I prefer to apply a hand-rubbed Oil Finish whenever possible.  This brings out the grain of the wood, highlighting the wood’s natural beauty.  However, I am not opposed to applying a stain or dye to achieve the look you desire.

Every item I make is customized to order and designed to last for years and look beautiful.

In my spare time, I volunteer at the USO at Richmond International Airport. In addition, I participate in the Honor Flight Program at Dulles Airport.

WORKING PROCESS

SKETCH THE DESIGN

It all starts with an idea, a sketch, a rendering, or a photograph. No one ever accused me of being a sketch artist, but I will do my best to sketch something from your ideas.

APPROVAL FROM CLIENT

Once the design concept is approved, the real discussions take place. We talk about possible wood species and if the piece is to be stained, left natural, or painted. We talk about sizes and the time to create the piece.

BREAKDOWN WORK

After all the decisions are made, an estimate will be prepared for your review. It is at this point, any changes you desire can be made. It will list the scope of the project, the materials used, and the labor necessary to complete the project.

Delivery or Shipping

If you are located less than 25 miles from my shop in Williamsburg, VA, I will deliver the piece to you. There is no charge for this. If you are located over 25 miles from my shop, I will estimate the cost to ship the piece to you. Once the deposit is received, the work can begin.

Testimonials

The quality of his woodwork is exceptional

Mr. Jeff (Woodworker) installed an window sill extension to all of my small window sills at my beautiful ranch style home. So now it serves as the perfect sill extender and much more. So now, I can perch next to a chair to replace the purpose a coffee table serves, provides extra room for my planters, a space to store my current read and/or remote.
Jeff said it will enable me to make more out of the smallest ledges. Scooting a bench or shelf in front of a window. Mr. Jeff, just to let you know how happy we have been with your professional attitude. You came into our home to remodel our window sill project with such professionalism.
To all viewers, Mr. Jeff was courteous and very prompt when we needed him. We are very thankful in his excellent craftsmanship and handling of our project. It is my pleasure to recommend Mr. Jeff as an excellent craftsman. The quality of his woodwork is exceptional. The sill is like a high grade window sill ledge you see at a décor Model homes and shows attention to detail and skill of execution rarely found.

I am extremely pleased with the result

Sometimes in life you make a quick decision that ends up being spectacular. Several months ago on a networking event hosted by my Alma Mater, RIT, I had the privilege of meeting Jeff Smith. When Jeff mentioned that he is a custom woodworker without missing a beat I asked if he could help me with a project for my business. Not only did Jeff follow up with me right away, he diligently followed up with me to ensure that the box we decided he would develop was exactly what my premier clients would like. The box is both BEAUTIFUL and well made. Jeff has turned out to be a great partner in business and friend. The wood box that he hand delivered to me is made from six types of material so that I can use it as a sample when I show clients different options. The inside of the box is as beautiful as the outside. He even had my business logo beautifully engraved inside. I can’t say enough about his service. I am extremely pleased with the result. As well as being very skilled in his trade, he is punctual, reliable, clean, and tidy and a true gentleman. Can’t wait to start sending him customized orders from my clients.
